In a couple of weeks we will begin discussing our first novel of the year, Laika. Laika is the (mostly true) story of the dog officially known as Laika who, on November 3, 1957 became the first creature from Earth to go into space. During this unit we will be learning about the race to space between the USSR and the USA. We will also be debating animal rights and how the issue relates to the novel and our lives today.

To help you appreciate the historical context of the Space Race, what was at stake, and just how revolutionary the scientific advances of that time were, I'd like to invite you to take some time (about 200+ min.) to watch this brilliant documentary by the BBC called Space Race which aired in 2005. There are four 50 min. episodes. All are posted below. Enjoy. It's well done. There may be some extra credit on the videos posted in a week or two.
